if your making purely beats ( no vocals) then (in order of ease of use ---> to most powerful, but complex):

fruity
reason
sonar - or cubase
pro tools

if your adding vocals then (same shit):

Cool Edit Pro (now called audition??)
Acid Pro & SoundForge 6.0
Sonar or Cubase

there are other programs that are more basic (hip hop ejay) but they aren't real producer platforms and if you serious about learnin to producer then u gotta take the time (months -> year(s)). not trying to discourage but this is how it is.

also, there is a lot more information concernin programs as well as how to use them in Opey's tutorials. if you haven't spent 15-20 min to browse through them and find this kind of infromation than i highly recommend doing so.
