Hate to get into someone elses fight but...
rakim, run DMC, KRS-one, NWA, PE, de la soul, wu-tang, outkast, pac, biggie, nas, jay-z, gangstarr, ll cool j, snoop even eminem
They aint big because they came with original style. run DMC, ok, they did. Public Enemy too. But KRS-One? You walk down the street anywhere in America and ask a random person who KRS-One is, and they won't know. Same with Gangstarr. NWA? They were only big because they rapped what people wanted to hear using Public Enemy's core style. They rapped gangster shit. Wu-Tang rapped gangster shit. Outkast was supposed to be beyond that, for all the wannabe heads. Eminem? Snoop Dogg? They were found on a random mixtape and sounded 'nice'. And they continued to sell shit because they rapped what people want to hear.
You gotta understand mainstream is mainstream because it's what people want to hear. Not what they should hear. Hell, Public Enemy has lacked a LOT of popularity. They still do their thing, but their last album Revolverlution had to be sold over the internet because no major label would take them on.
Hell, Macho Man Randy Savage is the best example I can come up with. He represents mainstream artists. Other people do the beats. Other people write the lyrics. And all the lyrics lack substance. In one line he says he comes with a style that's revolutionary, in another line he's quoting the furious five with "I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind". (And quoting the Furious Five is something I've noticed Snoop do A LOT.) Macho says he does it 'cause he loves music. But notice those grinding guitars? It's because rap-rock is popular, and rap-rock sells.
It's called Pandering. That's BUSINESS. Business has nothing to do with music. Business is about making money. In commercial business you make money by selling a product. You sell that product by having people want it. If people don't want it, they won't buy it. If they don't buy it, no money is made and the business falls apart.
It is literally what Amerikkka is founded upon, CAPATILISM. Remember the COLD WAR? That's what it was all about.
And don't say I'm a mainstream fan or nothing. I haven't bought an album or any thing since... well... since ever.
