I wouldn't just brush it off that quickly.
Kids who grew up with a father usually try to take the father's role at some point in time (ie. dressing up in his clothes, pretending to drive the car, reading the newspaper, etc) by assuming traditional paternal roles. And in a divorce, or a family fight, male children tend to take their mother's side. For example, if you dad was kicking your mom's ass, you you go fight him or would you say "yeah, smack that bitch up". Of course you would go help her!
I'm not saying that you're gonna go rape your mom because of this affection for her, I'm just saying that it's there, and maybe this kid escalated it to a really fucked-in-the-head level.
