Patriots recruited son, says mom

PITTSTON: The woman says ex-assistant football coach Al Serino persuaded her son to attend Pittston Area.

The mother of a Rochester, N.Y., football player alleges that former Pittston Area High School volunteer football coach Albert "Butch" Serino visited her home to convince her to transfer her son to Pittston Area.
Serino's cell phone records indicate that multiple phone calls were made to parent Tracy Butler's home and other Rochester numbers.

"He recruited my son to Pittston," Butler said.

She said Serino talked about Pittston Area and the academics for her son, Brandon Pearce. Butler said he offered to help her and the boy's father get jobs and find a place to live in Pittston.

Serino on Thursday denied Butler's allegations and said he has never recruited players for Pittston Area. "I never talked to a person up there. I don't even know her."

However, Butler's telephone number is one of numerous Rochester numbers listed on Serino's phone bills from the Pittston Housing Authority cell phone he was issued while on the authority's board.

The phone bill from January 2002 shows Serino's cell phone was in Rochester on Dec. 13, 2001. According to the bill, calls were made to Butler and other Rochester phone numbers on that date.

"Anyone could have grabbed my phone and used it," Serino said.

Butler said Serino and another man she could not identify visited her at home in December 2001 to discuss Pittston Area High School and the possibility of her son getting college scholarships. Brandon played football as a freshman at Edison Technical School in Rochester.

"I bought the idea that my son would have a better life," Butler said. She said she considered the transfer a "golden opportunity" for her son because of Rochester's high crime rate and the poor quality of city schools.

"My intentions weren't greedy, I just wanted what was best for my son," said Butler, a single mother. Her son attended Pittston Area after the football season, from January to August 2002. Butler said he got into trouble for a fight in Pittston and moved back to Rochester, where he is attending high school.

Serino acknowledged he has travelled to Rochester with Pittston Area parent Tom Smith because the two have become friends, but he could not recall whether he was in the city on Dec. 13.

"I never went up there and said, 'Come to Pittston Area.' I'm just a private citizen that loves Pittston Area," Serino said.

Butler said that neither she nor Brandon's father moved to Pittston, but their son lived with Smith while attending Pittston. Smith's son had transferred from Rochester to Pittston Area in 2001, sparking ongoing rumors of recruiting by Pittston Area.

"No, he did not live with me," Smith insisted Thursday.

Serino is the former Pittston Housing Authority board chairman and was investigated after allegations that he helped Smith get two nephews on a lease so they could play football for Pittston Area. Authority Solicitor Michael Butera said last week that he does not believe anything came of the investigation by the Inspector General's Office of the U.S. Housing and Urban Development.

"That was ridiculous to begin with," Serino said last week when asked about it.

Serino resigned in November 2001 as a volunteer assistant Pittston Area football coach. He had said at that time that he had heard rumors and allegations that he had a hand in recruiting players to the school, but he denied that.

Serino's cousin, Pittston Area Superintendent Frank Serino, said Thursday that he has no knowledge of Butch Serino recruiting for the district. "In no way has he been given any authority to represent Pittston Area School District," the superintendent said. He confirmed that Brandon was enrolled at the school during the second half of 2002.

Frank Serino said the School District has nothing to hide and he welcomes anyone with a complaint to contact the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. "Once and for all, I'd like it cleared."

PIAA rules prohibits "a representative of the school's athletic personnel or any other person affiliated with the school" from approaching students or parents about transferring children to a school to participate in athletics.

PIAA spokeswoman Melissa Mertz said a complaint may be filed with a PIAA district committee for up to one year after an alleged recruiting incident. She said that beyond that time, the committee may or may not consider a complaint. Schools can be expelled from the PIAA and face other penalties related to recruiting.

"They are serious allegations and there are serious penalties," Mertz said.
