Police have charged a woman accused of strangling an eight-months'-pregnant woman and cutting the baby from her womb in a macabre attack that has shocked America.

Officers say Lisa Montgomery, 36, of Melvern, Kansas, went to the home of her victim, Bobbie Jo Stinnett in Skidmore, north-west Missouri, on the pretext of buying a dog.

Authorities found the abducted baby girl in good health, ending a day of frantic searching.

According to a criminal complaint, Montgomery admitted she strangled Mrs Stinnett, 23, and took her baby.

The complaint also said Montgomery lied to her husband about giving birth, although US Attorney Todd Graves refused to give a motive for the crime.

Mrs Stinnett's mother found her daughter dying on Thursday. Paramedics tried to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The baby was found in an eastern Kansas home; a red Toyota hatchback matching a description offered earlier by police was in the driveway.

Although DNA tests were pending to confirm the baby's identity, authorities called off the Amber Alert issued for the child.

"We're confident we have the little girl that was taken from Skidmore," Nodaway County Sheriff Ben Espey said during a news conference in Maryville.

Montgomery is charged with kidnapping resulting in death.

Sgt Sheldon Lyon of Missouri State Highway Patrol said last night that authorities were questioning a man and a woman who were in the place where the baby was found.

Graves said the investigation was continuing but would not say if additional charges might be filed or if there was another suspect.

Graves said Montgomery contacted Mrs Stinnett through an online message board seeking to buy a dog from Mrs Stinnett, who raised rat terriers.

Graves said Montgomery, a mother of two, had been pregnant but lost a child.

According to the criminal complaint, Montgomery's husband, Kevin, told officers he received a call on Thursday from his wife, who said she was in Topeka, Kansas, about 40 miles from Melvern, and had gone into labour and given birth.

Kevin Montgomery and the couple's two children met Lisa and the newborn at a car park in Topeka and drove home, according to the affidavit.

The victim's mother, Becky Harper, said her daughter had called her about an hour before she found her, authorities said. She apparently hung up when someone turned up for an appointment to look at her dogs.
