Blah....they did have a choice. They could have moved, or just simply not joined. The world is much worse today than it was 30 0r 40 years ago....shit even 10 or 20 years ago. There is no one I know who's parents were in a gang, or atleast they don't say they were. There is a way to get out of it too.....JUST FUCKING MOVE! It's not like they put a fucking chip in you to know your every whereabouts. Basically, if they did not want to join a gang, they didn't have to (unless of course they were cornered and told they could either join the gang or die on the spot...)
