Both people need to check in before a battle is considered official. If he checks in, and doesn't post a verse and you do, you get the win. There is also a caveat... the first person to check in must post a verse before their due time or s/he'll get the loss even if the other guy doesn't post a verse because if he did, you would have lost anyways.
