well i have been using cool edit for 2 years, and i just moved to adobe audition, and i dont think i have ever had that problem... How many programs are you running in the background, cause the only thing i can really think of, is that your computer i lacking the resources to keep up wit the spitting.. So i suggest closing everyting in the background, or buying more RAM.. Iam just not really sure tho.....
