ahh theres all sorts of fiddling I had to do to get mine to record.
Make sure the red R is pushed...
Try going into windows volume control. Putting your mic volume up in there.
Go to properties in the volume control, and choose recording. Make sure microphone is selected.
Go to control panel, sounds or speech or audio in there or something. Do all the mic tests etc.
You'll get it eventually.
If you have a pretty good mic, check it doesnt need a 40v power supply, cos if it does you'll need to buy a pre-amp with that feature...
