Staring Death In The Face
An Open Mic by LL Cool K.
I stand frozen, the rain clouding my view before it strikes the ground
Unable to see my end coming, my fate sealed by one fatal sound
A split second left of existence and my entire life flies by my eyes
My actions, the good and the bad add up to equal my grand demise
Suffering disbelief in my good deeds, my hopeful memory mourns
Filled with the knowledge that I’m destined to fall before devils horns
A never-ending existence of torture is what my thoughts have guessed
No! I must have hope that I will kneel before God as a spirit blessed
Almost upon me, I feel the piercing shroud of death burrow into my chest
A thought of dread still shadowing my hope as my body lays down to rest
The inescapable end comes; it carries an image of a faceless hooded figure
The black hole within its hood holds a sinister grin that’s getting bigger
My eyes are forever closed; the darkness has teeth as it swallows me whole
The blackness caresses me, cleansing my naked body, purifying my soul
My mind becomes empty; I no longer possess a memory, not even my name
I am a broken frame, heading to my fateful end like a moth to the flame
Guided to my feet I stand before a question, into the light or the fire?
As my body is pulled to the heat my mind reaches out for the light I desire
It is not meant to be though, I watch as the light pours into my fiery grave
The burning gates await me; I am condemned to be pain’s eternal slave
I can feel the heat and it is unbearable, my limbs go numb and I collapse
Edging closer, I hear my heart beat, is this my second chance? Perhaps,
It beats again to the rhythm of new hope; my mind wills it to beat faster
I pull away from hell’s gates; I pull away from the devil’s maniacal laughter
Thoughts, memories, they come flooding back, I awaken into the night
I see the stars through glass windows as I lay down surrounded by light
Next to me I see a man relieved; he tells me my heart is at a steady pace
I smile as I fall into slumber knowing that I just stared death in the face
