Popular rapper Warren G has donated his time and money to various projects in the Long Beach area including the youth Midnight Basketball League and his annual “G Christmas Shopping Spree” which donates his personal money and toys to children at the California Recreation Center.

After years of giving back to his hometown, Long Beach Mayor Beverly O'Neall has proclaimed the week of August 1-6 Warren G Week.

The seven days will coincide with the opening of Warren’s latest project - the Willie McGinest Freedom School. Freedom School will serve as a summer enrichment program. It was originated in 1964 during the Civil Rights Era to teach African-Americans to read and write to vote. Today, it has evolved into an educational improvement curriculum that stresses the importance of reading. Supporters are hoping that such a program will build enthusiasm in students that carries into the fall school year.

The Willie McGinest Freedom School program will be the debut of this educational course in Long Beach. City native, Super Bowl Champion New England Patriot Linebacker McGinest, put up the seed money to start the school.

“The City of Long Beach owes Warren G a great amount of love and gratitude for his continued demonstration of care and concern for our youth,” states Pastor Wood. “He shows his love through the giving of his time and resources. He is always there when needed.”
