What One M.B said about the external modems is correct if you want dsl or cable high speed access while at home. There might be internal modems available for a laptop, but I say stick with an external modem that uses an ethernet connection (RJ45) to connect your computer/laptop to the internet. After that, get a wireless router and plug the modem into that and get a wireless internet card if your laptop doesn't have WiFi built in. That way you can have internet access anywhere in the house even when you are on the crapper. They now have 108 mbps WiFi cards and routers available.
For when you are in the car with a laptop, you can try to connect to nearby WiFi routers that are not encrypted. Basic encryption will keep most people out, but most people just set it up out of the box and leave their internet access wide open so anyone nearby with a wireless laptop can leech off their connection. There are websites online that list open routers in the various cities. As long as you aren't doing really important stuff like online banking, just go ahead and use them. If you go to CompUSA or whatever, they have keychains that will identify wireless routers nearby without you having to break out the laptop. Or if you are just lazy, sign up for something like Tmobile Hotspot and you'll be able to jump on the internet at places like
starbucks, airports, hotels, malls, kinkos, and other places that offer access.
