You don't actually need to have a Windows 98 disk to reformat the computer with XP. When you boot up with the XP install disk, there is an option to partition and format the disk. Don't remember the exact steps, but I remember doing it when I reinstalled XP pro on the laptop.
Don't know about XP, but I run Win2k on the desktop and it is pretty stable as long as you don't do stupid stuff to it like getting it infected with virii, ad/spyware. Before I rebooted last week after install microsoft patches, it was up for 43 days straight. without problems.
