when writing, always keep in mind the audience you intend on writing for. Try to reflect on what their likes and dislikes are. Paint them a vivid picture that can only make them want more from the story. It has worked wonders for me.

Another tip is to organise your material, decide on the location of the story, do a profile of the main characters and what they like dislike and also what they look like. This way your story will be consistant. If twists do occur they will be evident because it will go up against the consistancy of the plot.
