You mean, the whites were seen as superior until the 1960s.. not inferior.
But, the United States wasn't really THE powerhouse until the 19th century, when we passed up Britain with our capitalist domination. When discussing whether or not we are "ahead" of any countries, it's talking about the economy. Nobody rates racial issues and ranks countries around it.
