That sucks. It was a gamble. If I knew I was doing bad on the PSAT and got the phone call in the middle of the test, I would have left rather than take the C. If I was doing well, then it would have been a tough decision... I guess since you missed it by 1 point, you thought there was a chance... however the PSAT is kind of pointless. The National Merit Scholarship is worth like what? $2000? I can't remember if you need to do anything else to get the scholarship like interviews and stuff though. Colleges don't care what the PSAT score is, but do care about your grades.

Your friend on the other hand, is an idiot. If he was going to take the test at the same time you were, he would have known you were in the middle of the test. Why would he be calling unless he was going to leave a voicemail.
