I can tell you that hackers went through a craze a while back where they would use different symbols to make words, some still do. Which was the whole L337 thing...
Pwned is just the same thing. To some people it would be Pw|\|3D or some equally gay shit like that.. But on the rest of the web.. (Ie: non-geeks) pwned has jus become a recognised term.
Some people say pwned, some people say owned.. Some people would hear owned and go.. "huh?"...
Its jus part of internet discourse...
..........And it didnt take a degree in rocket science for me to figure that out either..
