Satan is the god of this world, though GOD is in full control. Satan is kept on a short leash. The reason GOD allows terrible things to happen is that he's letting people bury themselves. GOD is merciful. Therefore, he gives us chance after chance to get it right. But, there will always be stiff-necked and rebellious people who want to do nothing but evil. God will bring judgment to them and the whole world. It will be crushing.
