What you wanna do is seperate your hair into about 1 or one and a half inch squares, then backcomb it untill the shits real knotty and matted... Then wax the fuckers and keep em real tight with some hair bands at the roots and tips for the first few weeks...
Its a long ass process man... Should take you a whole day... Get ya girlfriend or someone who can be fucked standing round backcombing your hair for a few hours...
And once you got em made, ALWAYS roll em inbetween ya hands heaps to tighten em...
