Lock, I feel you man, I'm a product of the original hip hop generation and lived it as it was happening, I know what it's liek to sit on your boom box pumpin out KRS while people break, dresed in their acid wash Jordache's with some pumas and a bomber jacket on. I know what it's like first hand to sit and compare the skills of rakim to big daddy kane and be smiling about the whole thing, that's what I grew up on.
Sadly, you're faced with explaining the difference between the original which existed before most of the people you're explaining it to were even alive. Another chunk of that group had no interest in hip hop at all till 'recently' and by 'recently', I mean within the last 10 years and less. Any refferences to the originals is just a look back to history that they can't relate to since they weren't around to experience it. They "imagine" it, they don't "remember" it.
now how are you supposed to paint the picture when you're stuck using the terms today which have taken on a whole new meaning? The lines are su blurred now.
It's a tough situation for you and the reader. They can't fully relate to you, and the language is so destroyed that you can't explain it to them, it's almost like garbled speech to someoen who's hard of hearing. Neither of which is either of you guys fault.
