They used to allow people to drive past the white house until someone did a drive by shooting on it. Now, they have Jersey Barriers preventing people from driving down that stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue. However, you can still stand at the fence of the white house.
The military has F16s on ready at all times around the capitol now...You can't get a thousand yards over the White house before they either "escort" you out of that airspace, or COERCE you from it.
