Here's the answer to those who wonder "What's wrong with today's schools?"...simple

IP:

Research has shown that most students are of a certain personality type. There's something called "Process Communication" that identifies certain types of people. Most students fall into the category of "Promoter/Rebel"...These are people who need constant interaction/socialization and high levels of excitement, but in short/constant bursts. The same research shows that most teachers are NOT of that personality type, but the exact opposite. Therefore, the majority of the students in school are wired one way, but the system itself isn't set up to cater to them.

Go figure.

There's also something called the Kagan Strategies, which stress Cooperative Learning groups for kids throughout their development. Cooperative learning groups is more than just working in a group, but using socialization and personal accountability within the context of class work to further student achievement. It works people. But, again, most schools don't do this.
