3 things cause acne
Oil
Bacteria
Dead skin cells
When your skin doesn't flake off its dead skin cells, bacteria that naturally lives on the skin get trapped beneath it. Then, the oil on your face plugs it all in. As a result, your own body's immune system perceives that area as an infection because of the bacteria and send white blood cells to "fight" off the disease. What results is a PIMPLE/BUMP or w/e.
To help prevent acne, make sure you exfoliate your skin daily. Then, use a cleanser that removes oils. As for the bacteria component, use a small% of Benzoyl peroxide or Salicylic acid 2 times a week.
Stress can exacerbate acne by increasing your skin's oil levels, which consequently raises one of the factors that cause acne. Foods, contrary to the myth, don't "break you out".
