The word "tithe" means tenth...The actual etymology (history) of the word tithe comes from old english. But, the concept of giving a "tenth" goes back to the Levitical law Moses handed down to the Israelites before they became a nation.

Leviticus 27:30

-30And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD's: it is holy unto the LORD.

The command to tithe and the principle of giving is repeated throughout the old and new testaments.

I have to do research to find out what the ancient hebrew says. But, I'm sure it equates to 10th...

The New Life Version of the bible translates Malachi 3:10 as follows:

10 Bring the tenth part into the store-house, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this," says the Lord of All. "See if I will not then open the windows of heaven and pour out good things for you until there is no more need.
