uhh, no. "afro-american" was the next term after "negro". the prefix "afro" was never used in history till the hairstyle Afro existed, because that word didn't exist till the hairstyle Afro existed. "African American" came from the realignment of "afro-american" when people reversed the Mullet-American's tricknowledgy and made our identity more than a fucking hairstyle.
now if afro were really a prefix for Africa as you suggest the word would be Afri. Africentric, Afriamericans and so on.
