I'm pretty sure you'd consider Afro a modifier of American instead of Afro-American being a complete noun by itself. Nevertheless, the definition offered of Afro-American shows it is synonymous with African-American.

none of them fit perfectly cuz we didn't pick any of them. but in this day and age, your best bet is black. if you dont' feel comfortable using black, use african american.
