I wouldn't say kill you instantly, but maybe you should see a chiropractor.
May I ask, what kind of shit do you do at your work outs? Back problems are often caused by deficiencies in the back or abdominal muscles. If you are doing a lot of pectorals, arms and shoulders stuff at the gym you could be throwing off the balance in your body and putting extra strain on your back.
If you ever do bicep work remember to do tricep work, if you ever do chest work remember to do lat or back word, if you do a lot of abdominal stuff make sure you are doing back exercises as well.
I think though that a lot of abdominal exercises strength the back as well as the abs, so if you're not doing enough of that then maybe that's the problem..
