Its been tradition that the President of our country is the Commander in Chief which makes him the highest ranking person in the military. In history, the President has often been a previous military great, even our first President George Washington. I think that in our day and age with the wars that are going on and about to go on that we should make it mandatory for each Presidential candidate serve in the military for a minimum of a certain amount of years in the military so they at least get an understanding of what their job entails. I'm sure that the current thought is that the President is chosen as the person with the best views on each issue, but what people fail to realize is that he/she has power over our whole military. A weak knowledge of war tactics could break our country, especially if we end up with a hard headed President who won't take the advice from his military advisers (usually Generals or their equivalent).
