The best thing to do first is to have a playthrough of the game itself. You don't have to complete it, but play the story for a couple of hours at least and you will find that you have a general comfortable feel for the controls. Also, you would have developed unknowingly some tactics to shootouts as a result of taking on so many enemies.

Then when you play online you will more than likely find that you are a lot better. You have to remember though, some people are just gifted on FPS games. I am a good FPS gamer, but no matter how hard I try I can never beat my friend. He smokes me EVERY FUCKING TIME.

But, then he can practice and practice on sports games and I smoke him every time.
