$800 is more than enough to get a decent setup.

The RODE NT1A is an extremely solid mic. You'd be hard pressed to find a better one for the same price. I purchased one years ago and I couldn't have been happier. I'd advising staying away from the MXL mics personally.

Don't look over the cables that go with it either. Invest in some high quality XLR cables like Mogami Gold or something along those lines. After all, the cables are what the sound travels through to get to your mixer, so if you grab the cheap ones your quality is going to sound accordingly.

No need to go overboard though, just the basics and you should be good.
