Some of you might know I'm from Washington, D.C. Well, there's a section of D.C. called Southeast that's known for its poverty and violence, particularly among the young, black male populace. Two and a half months ago, there was a drive-by shooting in Southeast that left 4 teens dead, 5 in total from the onset of this entire ordeal. Here's a quick synopsis of how it all panned out--a true case of the butterfly effect.

1. This 19 year old (whose name is Carter) had a court hearing earlier that week but was released against the recommendation of the DA. (Bad decision # 1)

2. Being a free man, he went to a party where he had sex with an under-age girl. Before going up to see her, he took his shirt off and wrapped his FAKE gold bracelet in it, setting it on the steps of the apartment complex. (Bad decision # 2)


3. Later, he returned to find his bracelet had been taken...(no surprise there)

HOWEVER...His bracelet was NOT stolen. A female friend saw that he set it there and took it for "safe" keeping. She failed, however, to tell Carter. (Bad decision #3)


4. Carter then emerged outside the apartment complex and began arguing with people and trying to frisk them. No one was taking him seriously, so he called his brother for reinforcements. (Bad decision #4)


5. Carter's brother showed up deep, everyone armed with AKs, rifles, and .380 hand guns...all over a FAKE bracelet that wasn't stolen in the first place.


6. Carter and his brother, along with their gang, shoot up the block, killing 1 person.


7. The brothers are ID'ed and arrested on murder charges...But, because of lack of evidence, one (or both, I can't remember) are released!!!!!!!! (Bad decision #5)


8. Someone then tries to get retribution on Carter's brother but fails...


9. 1 week after the initial shooting, teens stood around after attending the funeral of the guy Carter and his brothers shot over a stolen bracelet...


10. The teens are shot dead in another drive-by as retaliation for the retaliation over the person whose funeral they were attending...4 are killed!



Interestingly, that night, I was coming home from bible study and ran into a road block....Police were EVERYWHERE! I didn't know what was happening at the time, but later discovered it was the scene where the guys crashed after fleeing police after they killed the 4 teens earlier.


All of this over a fake bracelet that was never stolen in the first place...All because Carter didn't just take the thing with him as he went upstairs in the apartment complex.
