Anybody ever ridden the rails?

I'm just curious, because I got invited to the other week. They were going to California, for an undetermined amount of time. I said I'd like to, but when I didn't have so much to worry about (school, work, etc.). I've always thought it'd be pretty cool just to run up on a slow-moving train and hop on with a couple friends and just go somewhere.

Anybody ever tried this before?
