Need help - Mic work work

ALright, Ive went through two mics so far.
I plugged inthe mic, made sure it was connected and ish. Ive got cool edit loaded, but for some reason i cannot hear shit.. i cant get the mic to work at all. i went through two brand new mics. My sound card is connected to the mother board, its a new computer, and its running windows 98.... Any Ideas? LoL i would be mad greatful
