How do battles work?

Greetings.. This is in no way an emergency.. I would just like to know how battles work, is there a separate link that needs to be created and posted in than the original call-to-battle thread? Cuz I can't tell if someone punked out of a battle they set up for me or if there is another link that I am just not clicking on.
