Aztek a Big Fake
IP: 0D11 88C9
I previously posted on Aztek's signing to Roc La Familia and briefly mentioned a controversy regarding his background initiated by an old acquaintance of Aztek's who goes by Krish that I first read about at Why Lout? It's been time!.
I recently got a note from Krish who basically says he went to school with Aztek for seven years and the guy is totally lying about his background. I'll excerpt some of his comments below but you can also get a musical version of the story via Krish's Exposed (Aztek diss) at Soundclick. At this point I'm not able to verify Krish's allegations but the story rings true and the diss track is pretty good as well, intelligently told, decent beats but the best part is Krish's vocal quality and flow. It's worth a moment.
Excerpts from Krish's note regarding Aztek:
"After hearing that someone i went to school with for 7 years in a very AFFLUENT area just got signed to the Roc i was quite surprised. When i learned more about it, i was appalled to see Michael Gomez (aka Aztek) claiming that he grew up in the "ghetto" and lived in "public housing." Sugar Land, his hometown, is a place foreign to crime yet he felt the need to fabricate his whole history to gain fame."
"I would honestly congratulate him on his new-found success if it weren't for the fact that he blatantly lies about his past and I'm afraid that many hip-hop fans will be fooled by this gimmick (as Jay-Z seems to have been tricked). After word of his deal got around, everyone from our high school kept insisting i expose the truth about him because the things he claims about his past are appalling (i.e. he lost his father and brother in the "family drug business".......when his father is STILL alive (an ex-cop) and he NEVER even had a brother)."
Krish has informed me that he had mixed feelings about making the diss track because he wants his music to be heard on its own merits. My basic response is that you have to get publicity anyway you can and, as long as you're honest about it, then your music will eventually be judged on its own merits. For my part, if there hadn't been the Aztek hook, I probably wouldn't have listened to his MP3.
I get regular requests to check out music and usually don't get around to it because I don't listen to music while I'm reading or writing and that's mostly what I do these days. In fact, the weird thing about doing ProHipHop is that I actually listen to much less new music than before I started this project, even though I have access to so much more because of ProHipHop's minor success.
What's strike me as odd or possibly even ironic about the Aztek situation is that Vanilla Ice has a new rap album about to drop. You know, he really blew it the first time around, although he did get incredibly rich, and it's taken him a long time to come back. Odder still, he's doing it via reality television. Now I have no plans to actually listen to Vanilla Ice and I'm not sure what kind of fan base he'll have but I'm reasonably willing to accept that he truly desires some kind of credibility since he's already had the dough. And he's been a serious road dog performing for years now and getting a lot of abuse.
