Movies Openings for the Week of Sept. 16

IP:

Just Like Heaven (PG-13) Wide Release

Mark Ruffalo finally meets his dream girl, played by Reese Witherspoon, but there's a catch: She's the ghost of a woman on life support. Napoleon Dynamite co-stars as an expert on romance from beyond the grave.

Lord of War (R) Wide Release

Nic Cage is having a grisly garage sale — his arms are half off! He plays Yuri Orlov, a global weapons dealer selling his deadly wares in Africa while being chased by an Interpol agent (Ethan Hawke) and pestered by his suspicious girlfriend (Bridget Moynahan).

Proof (PG-13) Wide Release

Warning: This movie involves math. But it's also got Jake Gyllenhaal and Gwyneth Paltrow as a former student and daughter, respectively, of a mentally ill numbers whiz (Anthony Hopkins). It sounds a bit like A Beautiful Mind, but it's based on the Pulitzer-winning play.

Venom (R) Wide Release

It's a briefcase full of evil! No, seriously. That's what this D-grade horror movie is about: a briefcase that's opened up in a car accident, allowing evil spirits to escape.

Cry Wolf (PG-13) Wide Release

This is a horror movie, all right — Jon Bon Jovi's in it, and we're not crying wolf!

Thumbsucker (R) Limited Release

This Lou Pucci kid is gonna have a big 2006. Just a hunch. He's the star of this dripping-with-indie-cred dramedy about a teenager who replaces thumb-sucking with Ritalin-gulping and joint-blazing. Keanu Reeves and Vince Vaughn co-star.

Corpse Bride (PG) Limited Release

The main character (Johnny Depp) is named Victor, and his wife-to-be (Emily Watson) is named Victoria. Of course they live in a strict Victorian society. No wonder he bails and marries a dead woman.

Everything Is Illuminated (PG-13) Limited Release

Nothing says "quirky" like putting on a pair of really thick glasses and a suit with a skinny tie. Frodo, known to non-Lord of the Rings geeks as Elijah Wood, stars in this adaptation about a man traveling to the Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandpa from the Nazis.

Separate Lies (R) Limited Release

From the writer of Gosford Park comes another story of snobby Brits lying to and cheating on each other. Fun! Tom Wilkinson is an older hubby who finds his seemingly happy wife (Emily Watson) leapin' in the sack with a younger gent (Rupert Everett).

The Thing About My Folks (PG-13) Limited Release

Here's the pitch: That guy from Mad About You hops in a car with Columbo, and together they terrorize upstate New York on a road trip from hell.

G (R) Limited Release

It's like The Great Gatsby, only with rappers and Wall Streeters in the Hamptons.

Hellbent (NR) Limited Release
THA Q is gon watch this....lol..no offense...
it's the first gay slasher movie! At the West Hollywood Halloween Carnival, a bunch of hot men in skimpy costumes are slashed to pieces by a psycho in a devil outfit.

One Bright Shining Moment: The Forgotten Summer of George McGovern Limited Release

When was the last time you saw a political documentary with Elvis Costello, Warren Beatty and Bob Dylan? This left-leaning indie follows George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign.
