Trip-Hop

Derived from Hip-Hop. Pioneered by Massive Attack. Influenced many artists of all genres (including hip-hop). People like Tricky (now based in NYC) work with artists of all sorts (Jay Z, Gravediggaz, Mary J Blige to name but three)...
Beats and tunes are usually more dense and layered than hip-hop. Which are relied on much more than singing/emceeing. Which instead are used sparingly. Pushed forward and under. It's not all that widespread. And well, that isn't really the 'point' of it. It's a genre (sub-genre?) that is meant to remain on the outskirts, occasoinaly moving into the centre with such albums as Mezzanine, Blue Lines, Maxinquaye etc. Anyone listen to trip-hop? What do you think of it? Don't compare it to hip-hop and put it down. Because that'd be ridiculous and pointless. Reasons stated above. |

I know a guy who just about all he listens to is Trip-Hop. Pretty much because though all he has is freestylers.
Personally, I don't really have anything against Trip-Hop. But it doesn't strike a cord with me. And I can't really get behind things that sound like noise so blatantly. So I pretty much ever listen to it when someone else in their car is playing it and has loud speakers. |

I like tricky...and just about anythng that my digtal
cable will provide me in the form of acid jazz... the beats are smoothing and sometimes make me think of better topics to 'churn out' ~your phrase~ I liked it as much as I liked techno music which I still do buy not as much...moreso when I used drugs... acid jazz is for everyone though... Heh.
Nah, it's far from just mere noise. Once you pick up on the subtle undertones. And the overall rythm(sp). Then again, each to his own. I don't think it has that much to develop. Maybe in terms of expansion. But albums like Mezzanine, Maxinquaye and Blue Lines are known as masterpieces of modern music. Let alone trip-hop. And yeah, it does help one write/freestyle more than some other genres. Has an atmosphere to it. |
