Canadian officer offers thanks to gracious Americans AS I SEE IT
By Robert E. Kearney

A note of thanks to Kansas City and America from a grateful Canadian.

As a current resident of Fort Leavenworth serving as the Canadian Forces liaison officer with the U.S. Army, my family and I have grown accustomed to enjoying the great hospitality shown to us by folks living here in the heartland of America.

So I would like to extend a small note of thanks to some great Americans who truly made me feel welcome and proud to be serving in such a great country.

Recently I had to attend a military conference in Canada. Due to a short window of time to get from Fort Leavenworth to KCI airport, I had to travel in my Canadian Army attire.

Once at the Kansas City airport, I received nothing less than first-class treatment throughout my travels. At check-in at United Airlines, I was greeted at the counter with a “thanks for serving, sir.” A gentleman in the Starbucks line offered to pay for my coffee. A lady asked me about my uniform, after which she ardently thanked me and Canada for fighting terrorism and “standing with America in Afghanistan.”

Once on the United Airlines flight bound for Toronto from Kansas City, I settled in for the voyage in my seat in hospitality class. The lady sitting beside me, who was on her way to Tuscaloosa, greeted me with a few questions about my uniform as well and ended with the comment “thanks for serving your and my nation, sir.”

Needless to say I was in an incredibly good mood. The kindness and respect continued when a flight attendant approached me shortly before takeoff and asked me to move up front into first class as a “small token of thanks” for serving. I was overwhelmed at this point that a Canadian Army officer was being treated as “one of your sons.”

Upon arrival in Toronto, I jumped into my rental car and proceeded to the conference, reflecting back on what a wonderful day it had been — I was prouder than ever to be serving my country as well as bestowed with the privilege of serving in such a grateful and respectful country as America.

In today’s global media, it has become quite fashionable of late to bash America, her great people and her proud military. It is truly a shame that these folks have not experienced what my family and I have.

It may not be said enough, but thanks, America, for being there and treating me as family. Cheers!

Happy Thanksgiving kids.
