Rap is it selling out?

IP: A81A 8749

In my eyes yes it is!
You dont get any raw hip hop anymore, every album has got the same artists on it i.e. Jay-Z, Xzibit, 50 Cent, Eminem, Naz etc....
Yes they are all good, thats not my arguement its just that everything is getting the same.

BLING BLING
CARS THAT MATCH WHAT YOU WEAR
5 million women all doing the same dance in there vids all looking the same (sexy though)
Its all about the money

It always was about the money but it was never as in your face, all they do now is boast and big themselves up which is wack....hip hop is about the music, where you live and how you wanna be......the money and the fame is just a good thing that comes with being good at it.

PLEASE CAN WE GO BACK TO BEING RAW....

Underground is underground for a reason.

Guaranteed, half of the delicately-labeled "backpackers" would hate today's "underground" music if/when it goes "mainstream." Obviously, the mainstream is the status quo and marketing is the name of the game, but people who hate "mainstream" music just because it's popular are fools squared - hell, cubed! There will ALWAYS be a mainstream! Mainstream connotates the entertainment that is in the limelight at any given time. . If there is no limelight, there is no entertainment; so, get over it and stop making these threads!

please

there's still sum raw hip hop out there: Talib, Mos Def, Ganstarr, The Roots, Jurassic 5, Dead Prez, etc. but it's not mindless head noddin in your car rap, or bumpin in a a club rap which seems to be what MTV and Radio want to push the most. Prolly cuz it appeals to the largest audience. Marvel is right, after Eminem rappers realised that if they appeal white kids (85% of Rap Buyers are white) they'll make a shitload more cash. I think what people frustrated at is that the mainstream changed n mc's who might have gotten pushed in the past ain't cuz they won't sell as much to kids who barely know the difference between Naz and Justin Timberlake.

So they make dumb pop rap where the lyrics aren't important. All they want is a beat with a hook and a lyrical style that complements the beat. THe rapping is just anutha instrument in the track to the producer, instead of being the focal point.

It's kinda ironic cus Eminem still puts out some decent material, but he also puts out a lot of the new type rap, n 50 is entirely 'don't have to pay attention to the lyrics' type rap. It's a problem cuz a lot of the guys who are chossin the next acts (Puffy, Dre, etc) don't care about the lyrics no more. It's all about how big will the album sell.

Shit - don't fuckin say shit like that...

Rap sold out at about the time when NWA came out and rap crossed over to the mainstream.

Before eminem, we still had, jigga, nas, 2pac etc

All people who wrote ongs for the mainstream audience as well as the real rap fans.

Aight. I don't see anything wrong with this myself - maybe cuz Hip Hop's still a fairly small business in the UK - well actually its huge but not in the mainstream..

Our rap scene is very raw at the moment... Really raw - no bling bling shit..

It's like we've reverted back to when rap was about breakin and graf except its got the ruffness - stabbings shootings at clubs etc that artists had mid 90s.

UK is the future....

You Are All Wrong. Yes Your Right Hip-Hop Is About Love And Creativity, I Personally Think HipHop's Not Selling Out, Because You Have To Remember That HipHop Is Also About Block Parties And Shit Like That. Without Joe Budden Or Cash Money. "What Would You Play In The Club, Canibus?"

Hip Hop is not selling out at all. Sure they have some of the flashished shit that you have even seen but hey, look past that to the rhymes. There are some rappers out there that suck, Nelly and 50 Cent, yes 50. Listen to their CD's, they sing and not rap like they are made out to be. Eminem on the other hand cannot sing worth shit and raps in his records, meaning it is easy to flow on. Rappers are selling out but there rhymes have yet to be sold out, we need a couple more years for that to take effect.

this argument has been going on since run-dmc did that crossover with aerosmith. face it mainstream is not a synonym for selling out labels promote what they think people will buy. artist make songs to sell records. if you don't like it, DON'T LISTEN TO IT! i'm sick of hearing people saying hip hop is selling out. the music industry is a business, plain and simple.
