I say that writing, and actual rapping ability defines a rapper...

i say the ability to rap is the core aspect of being a rapper

everyone can 'rap'

I think content has alot to do with being a rapper.

Mims jibbs souljah bou and a million other 'rappers' arent emcees, well not hip hop emcees, they are simply that, the rap fans rapper.

I dont think you can narrow it down to a specific sound style or type of person.

It like asking, what makes a human a human.

I think freestyling is just one small aspect of being a rapper...


When you get into the debate of who's the greatest of all time, I think it hinges upon what core fundamentals people value the most--i.e., freestyling, writing, rapping.

Yeh, there are a few things that make a good emcee. But to me a dope rapper doesnt need to be able to freestyle or battle.
Emcee I support to the death is Royce 59. He cant battle, but I dont sit here and say he is a weak emcee cause of it. Same goes for a few other dope emcees, they are strong in one point, and weaker or even wack at another.

I think this thread should be, whats makes a rapper NOT a rapper. Then we can filter out the reasons why too many emcees getting radio play are wack as fuck and have a huge following.

I think Royce got in D12's ass with that Malcolm X shit.

ok i was taking Q's question at face value

but in terms of being a real emcee i say it's down to

rapping and writing combined

you've gotta be skilled at both to be considered a good emcee

substance and style

then again i guess thas why the true hip hop heads don't feel any one rapper is the best

^^Precisely...when I say "Biggie is the greatest," what I mean is that he's influenced me the most and he's the emcee I'm most impressed by.

I dont think none of those things you listed makes a rapper. I think its the ability to get your point across and what your trying to say across to people. Anybody can rhyme but it takes actual skill to get across a point in a rhyme.

well from what I see on TV what makes a rapper is nice (not fancy) clothes, a decent, clean face and the ability to flow words in a rhythm. Perhaps a "chain" also.
