well it depends on a persons abilities and how deep into each you'd like to go. doooope punches take time for some people, for some not. same with poetry content.

I just think anyone could write a rap verse, not everyone can write poetry.

Well that depends on the read. We all know it's harder to rap then read. I do both and I find poetry flows off the tounge rather easy, as opposed to some of my more complex rap verses. So if it's just a written issue, I guess you can argue both sides, but when it boils down to delevery, Rap is much harder to spit.

EDIT: I think anyone could write a rap verse (<--as qouted by yourself) but to be a truly ammazing rap, it's going to incorperate many technical aspects taken from poetry. So they complement each other to a degree...

I would say they are both equally difficult... poetry flows out easier, less restriction on form, rhyming is not necessary, but you have to be able to Move the reader in a profound way....

Rap - it's easy to make something rhyme or say something witty, but to write it in a way that allows for excellent delivery and impact takes talent... plus you have to be able to turn that written song into something that sounds good...(unless you are talking about text only, which in my opinion doesn't compare to good poetry no matter how well a verse is written).

but the bottom line is, RAP IS POETRY

Personally, their both aspects of writing. If you look into some pieces ive written, they take me days to perfect before i post them here. Every line i run over, check the wording, adjust the pattern etc until im pretty sure its how i want it to sound or come across. Add to that the imagery, emotion, multi's, internals, wordplay, rhyming couplets, similies, alliteration, syllable count. There's really a lot involved, its not like i just sit there and the first word that rhymes i jot down, you know?

Rap is poetry minus the beat.

The topic which the "poem/rap" is written upon does not change anything.

But anyways, definitions are overrated.

I just think poetry is more insightful and deep rather than murderous and "gangsta" like rap is..that's why I think it takes more talent to write poetry. Packed full of emotion..it's what I like. No changing my mind .

then you have a very limited selection of rap that you have listened to.... some albums, like Outkasts first (Southernplayalisticadillacmusic) does have some gansta to it, but embodies a much bigger movement and the emotions associated with the subject - it's a very angry album yet the ideas and statements are intelligently spoken and convey alot more than just G's and Hoes shit... struggle of the blacks in the South, ect. or listen to common or Eminem and tell me they don't have emotion that strikes you as well written...

broaden ya mind PixieL

all rap isnt like that. listen to someone like mos def, his rhymes are kind of poetic,(he does def poetry too) if you want poetic rap download bottle dreams by eydea, or get some sage francis, or aesop rock(i hat him but people say he is poetic) if you think rap is all about the stupid shit you hear on the radio your missing the truth about what its about.

Another victim of commercial hip hop. If you let what airs on radio or mtv, dictate to you what rap is, then you have already lost, my friend. So many members on so many boards all speak volumes as to what a disgrace commercial hip hop and rap has become. The industry rapped the game. You need to look for new avenues of music along the lines of rap and hip hop, but not those only played on the air. Like these guy's have mentioned there are so many other artist out there to listen to.

Well this is of the subject a bit, but here on RB, is one of the better peotry forums I've seen in a while. Go check out poetic scriputres, drop some feedback then post some of your work. I am confident you will be amazed at some of the poets in there. I have dropped raps there that were looked at as poetry....
