1.) use lower keys/notes
2.) slow down the BPM of the beat 3.) use thicker basslines

Use different melodic/harmonic modes. Minor melodies and harmonies usually do it but if u wanna get creative u can use the classic modes. Or easy way out sample form dark depressing sounding music.
