Popular rap and hip hop artist DMX faces up to a year in jail after he was charged with violating the terms of a plea deal.

DMX, real name Earl Simmons, pleaded guilty last December to reckless endangerment after he crashed into a gate at New York airport in June 2004.

The rapper, 34, was given a conditional discharge but broke the terms of the agreement after he was involved in two subsequent motor incidents.

He is currently on bail and scheduled to return to court on 11 October.

At the time of sentencing last December, Mr Simmons - who admitted driving while taking the drug Valium at the time of the incident at JFK airport - also had his license suspended and received a fine.

However, one week later he was charged with speeding when he was caught driving at 104mph near his Westchester County home.

Four months later, in April 2005, he was arrested again on suspicion of driving with a suspended licence after a minor crash involving a police car in New York.

The rapper was driving a car that hit the back of another vehicle, which in turn hit the rear of a police cruiser, police said. Two officers were treated for minor injuries after the incident.

At a court in New York, Mr Simmons' lawyer Murray Richman argued that the rapper did not cause the injuries to the officers and was on his way to hospital to see his wife at the time of the accident.

DMX has been one of rap's biggest stars since the late 1990s and has also moved into acting, with roles in films Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds and Cradle 2 the Grave.
