anyone can rap just as anyone can write a poetry... for it to be good, thats another story...
i can write a poem and it make no sense and call it "abstract", rap you have to have a point (even if its stupid, like gangster), but its to each his own... you can't compare the two...

If we're talking about the words:
Poetry is a line of words, followed by another line of words, that can or can't rhyme. Rap is a line of words, followed by another line of words, that is supposed to rhyme. (although, some of rb's dumbasses such as TRUE*D haven't figured this out yet). pretty simple. the emotion can be in either. rap can have hatred, poetry can too although not many do. rap can be about love, so can poetry. well this is how i look at it. |

personally, its harder to write rap, punches, multies, and good vocab all together to make a good rap. when ya battle u have an oponent, when writing poetry its just lettin out emotions. poetry comes more natural for me so to me it seems that it would take more skill to write a good verse, than writing a good stanza.

Its rappers who write they rhymes like they are poetry like the Common's, Mos Def's and the Nas's, it's poets who can moonlight as emcee's too like Sage Francis, Yusef Malik and Saul Williams the only thing diffrent is that poery ain't really written to a beat. But they go hand in hand tough, its really the same thing to me. They have Emcees on Def Poetry Jam and all they do is just spit accapellas of they raps....
