On 420, (national weed smoking day of course).. my highschool set up cameras in the houses behind the school facing smokers corner. Since it's a catholic high school, there normally isn't any video surveillance on the premises. The school did not post any signs or provide any information of any kind informing the students that they were being filmed...Hence the reason about 40 people out on smokers corner (which is off school property i may add..) got suspended.

My question is...

Is it even legal to film people without providing adequate information that there are cameras nearby? Is that not invasion of privacy? Lastly, would a school have the power to suspend a student for something they did off school property?

cathlic school would b able to suspend for someone off school property cause in any private school the purpose is to shape u into a responsible adult in everything u do.

Private schools aren't held by the same legal ties that public schools are. If it was in the interest of safety and enforcing the rules. then it is legal.

to the first question it is illegal to film someone without there permission.....thats why like on that show COPS some peoples faces are blured out......to the 2nd question im not sure if its invasion of privacy but i would think so.....to the last question NO..........but i am no lawer.....just ma opinion

Even at a public school, most of your rights are given up when u walk onto school grounds.... u cant hold those same principles on yourselves... they can do shit like that and yes if you do something like that at school that was organized b/c of school they can suspend u... these dudes got suspended at my school for a fight that they got in across the street but because it was organized at school, they still got suspended.... u cant hold ur legal rights to u when ur in school.... but wouldnt it have made more since for them to tell u that u were going to get filmed since their purpose was to get you all not to smoke????? Thats what i dont get......

If it was illegal to film someone without their permission there wouldnt be cameras in department stores or liquor stores. Private schools can do whatever the hell they want. 100% Legal.

^^^not true...we have a smoking section at our school...our parking lot is right next to the school and as long as ur off the pavement u can smoke...they even call it the smoking section and go out there at lunch time to make sure we only smoke cigs....it's about 50 feet from the school
