there are only 6 billion people in the world...

say on average everyone in the world knows 100 people...

that means each of the 100 people i know know 100 people each who know 100 people each who know 100 people each...

100x100x100x100x100x100= 1 trillion

now of course you have to account for overlaps and stuff but there is still a LOT of wiggle room...

the theory is definitely plausible...you probably could trace yourself back to most people...like high 90%'s...within 6 degrees of seperation...

the reason it seems impossible is because youd have to know ALL 100 people that your 100 friends each know and blah blah blah...its too many people for you to visualize...

but i could buy into the theory...

Nah, you cant base things on numbers to that much of an exact measure.

Not everyone knows approximatly 100 people. In less dense areas it could be feasable for a vast amount of people to know less than 10 people.. Then theres places like certain asian countrys where a young persons life is mostly comprised of being an abolute nobody in extremily over crowded classes. A lot of those people would see faces, but not know that many at all.. The world is a really diverse place and you cant use estimated statistics like that to prove a theory or give it any real credit like this.

While implying it's because some people don't know a lot of people, without implying that some people know enough people to make up for it...

If someone doesn't "know" 100 people, they are pathetic human souls who need to kill themselves to remove their lazy carcasses from the planet earth

It's possible I know thousands of people...at least that I've met them...

"know" doesn't necessarily mean..HANG OUT with...or TALK TO regularly...

meaning I met them...had some interaction

I "know" the County Executive where I live...But, I've never "hung" out with him...

dawg...100 people?...I think it's possible I know thousands of people. Especially since my job requires me to be around so many people all day every day

and I believe the "average" person knows well over 100 people.

Depends how loosly you use the term 'know'..

In my case its kind of different cause a lot more people know me when I dont know them.. So I find myself sometimes getting a bit arrogant when it comes to who I'd actually stand up and say "yeah I know them" and shit like that..

And while I'm on that; how well do you have to know someone to be able to say that you know them? I think Chris Rock put it best when he said "When you meet someone for the first time, your not meeting them..........Your meeting their 'representitive'". And that shit is so true. I mean, you cant just talk to someone for half an hour, or make small talk while your at work with someone and really say "I know that person"... Cause thats like playing one game of baseball when you were 15 then saying to someone now a days "I play baseball"..

What it implies can be seen in different ways.
Prolly I'm thinking too far into the technicalitys of this.. And I can see how its feasable. But I just dont view the world from such a statistical standpoint as that. So this theory to me just seems like pointless bullshit..

You can say all day that you know george bush from a 3 degree seperation. But when it all boils down to it. In reality you dont ACTUALLY know him.. And the person thats talked to him, probably doesent REALLY know him on any kind of personal level as opposed to a formal work related level.

This is why I think this theory is wrong.
