It's a politically correct term when it comes to white people and I doubt he meant anything from it. Who the hell would use racism when apologizing for using racism?

afro american is not a politically correct term. you may think it is, but you're white, so what you think about what offends someone else, is irrelevant. blacks accept "afro american" because we have low expetations that you'll understand. its lik we pat you on your head and say "we know you're doing your best". "afro american" is a phrase thats based on a hair style. it has nothing to do with a people or a culture, or your american history or anything. just a hair style.

and nah i don't think he meant anything derrogatory in his mistake. he just doesn't know.

Exactly. Here is afro's definition regardless of time frame and any other ridiculous summations for afro such as the hair thing. Apexx, Im no master of linguistics, so I'd have to look it up, but Im sure there is a good reason for why its "afro" rather then "afri". Sources coming soon.

I'm just gonna say it one more time man. "afro" is a hairstyle. your people want "afro" and "afri" to represent the same thing. the reality is... they don't. "afro" is not representative of "afri". those are completely seperate words, they completely seperate origins, and have completely seperate intentions.

What is the correct label for your race then when it comes to distinguishing them from others?

I can't figure out if Michael is sincere in his apology because he seems seriously torn up, though other people seem to think he looked really fake.

Hell, I've had some racist thoughts before...nothing like 'I want to kill that fucker', but just random things'll pop into my head. I obviously have no conscious hate for any blacks --- I mean, I'm on a fucking rap site and I regularly hang out with any race, but it's pretty much unavoidable.

Exactly, everybody has, I think freedom of speech must be used responsibly without the absensce of reason, people think it just means say something and run off with it like a charlatan. Demeaning or detracting a person's quality or ability to do the same defeats freedom of speech. There is no line to be drawn but there comes a point where you must ask yourself "Is my freedom of speech going to benefit those WITHOUT it? If not, I should just stfu. If so, more power to me for utilizing it.".

According to that, the first definition is that it pertains to black traditions and culture or Afro-Americans. That is when it's used as an adjective. The hairstyle is a noun. I'm pretty sure you'd consider Afro a modifier of American instead of Afro-American being a complete noun by itself. Nevertheless, the definition offered of Afro-American shows it is synonymous with African-American.

none of them fit perfectly cuz we didn't pick any of them. but in this day and age, your best bet is black. if you dont' feel comfortable using black, use african american.

no one would think you're trying to be disrespectful because they don't expect you to know better, but yes, you are correct. african american is by far superior to afro american. and don't forget, it's not perfect...it's just better.
