So if you write a story and say "I walked into my room and saw my dog eating chicken!"
You probably meant to say that you saw your dog, eating some chicken. As a chicken that can eat a dog doesn't make sense. And sure everyone will get what you're trying to say, but you'll still get a nice X beside that phrase from your english teacher. Wait.... you never went to college did you? Ummm... did you graduate highschool? Looks like your brain isnt as complex as you think it is |

"a man-eating shark" is a carnivorous fish.
and "a man eating shark" is a male human in the active process of consuming a shark. I misunderstood what LK was saying but she's right, and JT "man eating shark" and "man-eating shark" are not the same thing. |

For what it's worth I came into this thread expecting to see the Bizarre Foods guy eating a shark.

nah man you're wrong...assuming the words man eating shark are written down alone, you need a hyphen between man and eating for the context of the three words to refer to a shark that eats people, otherwise it clearly refers to a man eating a shark i learnt this in english |
