are you serious, Implicit?
wtf does the fact that we elected a black President from Hawaii have to do with the racist justice system, the education gap, or the fact that whites are still BY FAR advantanged economically just by being born white? there have always been exceptions (CEOs of major companies, etc.)... but that isn't the point. everybody knew that as soon as Obama got elected Republicans were gonna our try and use that as an argument against any kind of progress in civil rights or any kind of talk about inequality. "how can you say black people don't have an equal opportunity, our President is black!" that doesn't have anything to do with how our society is divided... okay, so 43 of our Presidents have been white and 1 has been black and you want to talk about equality? lol, get out of here with that shit. tell me one way the election of Obama has changed ANY of the ways in which blacks are oppressed in this country? hopefully it WILL change some of those things through his policies, but i'm saying... it doesn't disprove anything.

Equality is a whole different topic. I just want to know who we consider "the man" now.
I see what you mean and I agree in some ways. But this thread in no way is about equality. |

LOL, seriously?
"the man" is a figurative phrase, it doesn't actually refer to any one man.

The Man is above the president. Notice the capital letters.
There's nothing Obama can do about The Man. They probably shake him down for not paying dues every fiscal quarter.

The term "the man" hasn't been used by black people since the 70's and as only been used since, to mock anyone who believes in any kind of discriminatory oppression. "The man" has always referred to the government". Not the president. But what would I know about black people

lol, very true... i was just responding to his use of the phrase, but it has DEFINITELY never referred to the president. it is a figurative phrase used for the dominant culture in general. but, ya know... according to all of the brilliant people on this website i'm a dumbass because i go to one of the top universities in the nation and STUDY this shit... not to mention the fact that nearly every scholar on the topic agrees with me.
