soccer has been around throughout history in many civilizations which involves the foot, the ball, and whichever rules that civilization saw fit.

Americans decided that while playing FOOTBALL, that they, as Americans, would use their hands, as their own civilization's rule. The name stayed, the rules were slightly altered, and as time went on, the sport kept evolving but in the end, the name was never changed.

When stuck up non-american faggots showed up and said "OMG THATS NOT FOOTBALL, THIS IS FOOTBALL, SEE? FOOT + BALL LOL YOU GUYS ARE IDIOTS YOU'RE PRACTICALLY PLAYING RUGBY."

and no, the english invented modern day soccer type football, whereas America evolved modern day rugby type football.

The term soccer actually did come from England... but when Americans said "Football", they didn't mean foot + ball.. hence my extremely pumped up and in-your-face explanation to point out that American football is better in the aspect that it's American, and people who take pride over the Foot + Ball theory need to keep quiet instead.
